Match Report

May 27, 2019

On first sight it would appear that a 5-0 defeat to the top team in the league was an improvement on the 9-0 loss to them pre-lockdown.  However, it certainly didn’t feel that way!

A somewhat changed side, missing four regulars, battled hard to keep the score at just 0-2 at half time, but defensive lapses and poor marking allowed the visitors to run out comfortable winners in the end.

A number of fine saves from skipper Jan kept the score down, and Colin, playing his first game for us, worked tirelessly to keep things together in midfield, assisted by Wayne. Dave T. put in some lively work attempting to connect with our front men and, at the back, John and Brian strove manfully to try to stem the tide!  Essentially, however, we were outplayed, and for the second game in a row we were unable to find the net.  Dave R. and Cedric had spells up front but, apart from a good on-target shot from the latter, saw little of the ball.  It was a thankless task as they were well shackled.

Herne Bay play a game that is difficult for us, and other teams, to combat.  They keep possession well, and do not consider passing back a crime!  On a few occasions they went back from close to our area almost to their own, in order to build again and find a better opening, which they often did.

There is certainly no lack of effort on our part, but our task could be made a little easier with more movement and communication, and to quote our referee, Steve Rich, we are guilty of poor marking and ball-watching!  Herne Bay never stopped moving or talking, and their marking made it so hard for us to progress.

We don’t have to play Herne Bay again, and learning some lessons from that defeat, perhaps we can hope to achieve our first victory in the near future!
