Four teams turned out for this mini tournament at Margate tonight. BayCity Strollers, Margate, Ramsgate and us.
We thought we’d impress everyone with our new yellow kit, walked into the changing room and found everyone wearing a yellow kit. Luckily, we had some bibs, but they were yellow as well, albeit a slight different shade of yellow. The team: Big Tom in goal, even bigger Steve in defense, the 2 midfield wizards of John and Roger with Julian (who ended man of the matches) up front.
Our first match was against BayCity, and although we were putting on a brave face, we though oh no, here we go again… but what happened next will be remembered for years to come by the BayCity players, and if not, we will periodically remind them.
We beat them 1 – 0 with a cracking angled goal from Julian. Roger and John battled like Roger and John do, and Big Steve was there to mop up what they missed. We did ourselves proud and I must say, the BayCity lads were magnanemous… magnanermus… magnanermouse… magnanimus… ok in defeat. We tried to hold our composure but there may have been a smidgen of unsavory arm waving and ‘take that’ muttered.
It was a very close and hard fought game played in the spirit in which all Baycity and Canterbury games are played.
Our 2nd game was against Ramsgate in which we drew 1 – 1. This brought us back down to earth and this was noted and muttered by the BayCity lads as we marched off.
It was a scrappy game and we found ourselves 1 down after Steve and John couldn’t make up their minds as to who should go for a ball that trickled slowly between them. They were still trying to decide even as Tom was picking the ball out the back of our net. We fought back and missed several chances until Rog finally managed a shot on goal and it was 1 – 1.
Still all to Play for.
Our 3rd game came straight away after, and we were very sleepy and feeling rather old. We lost 4 – 0 to Margate. We had our moments in the game, but they were moments when we didn’t play well. We should have had a goal that was not given when Roger smashed the ball from a tight angle into the net just inside the crossbar, but for some strange reason, the ball rebounded just outside the goal line. This wonder goal would have made no difference to the outcome though, as we were well beaten in the end. We came off the pitch still celebrating our 1 – 0 victory over BayCity.
For a reason we still can’t fathom, those results put us in a semi-final against BayCity.
This I think was our best game. It was mostly fought out in midfield and we really didn’t give BayCity many close range shots. They had quite a few long range efforts, but mostly from the own goal line. We could have nearly sneaked it when Julian had a great shot saved by their keeper. All in all I think 0 – 0 to us, was a fair result.
Then came the penalties. What a rotten way to end a game. Rog and Steve managed to blast theirs in, but Tom, John and Julian’s shots never quite reached the keeper.
BayCity then went on to win the final. I can’t remember what the score was, but well done BayCity.
It was then off to the bar for some grub and a beer and have the trophy waved in front of our noses. Thank you Margate, BayCity and Ramsgate, we really enjoyed ourselves and want to do it all again soon.
