The crowd of one at the Ames Levett Stadium on Wednesday night was witness to the greatest massacre since The Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876.
There wasn’t much between the teams for the first 8 minutes, but it quickly became clear that Folkestone were eying up their prey like a cobra before striking deadly venom into its luckless victim. Canterbury became mesmerized, unable to respond to the sleek passing game that was unfolding before them. Goal after goal rained in – it was like the charge of the Light Brigade:
“Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell”
At one point the referee had to run to the Sport Centre reception desk to borrow a scientific calculator merely to enable him to work out the correct score. It was carnage.
What could possibly save the Canterbury team…..?……..Ah – the final whistle.
