The first half of the game was a cagey affair with both teams sizing each other up like a couple of heavyweight boxers. CWF taking some time to get into their stride. Player/Coach Phillips, gets a chance to assess his players in real-life action and is thinking, “blimey, this game is slow!”. However, CWF soon got to the pace of the game 🙂 , Butcher and Betts controlling the midfield, with Mundin holding the back line and Ballantine pushing on from the defence, working box-to-box. Margate were ‘workmanlike’ and gave CWF a couple of uneasy moments but Roger Betts eventually rattled one in with a right footed rocket into the corner.
This settled CWF down and they started to sweep the ball around as though they had been playing this game all their lives (!!) A couple of minutes before time, Betts (again!) finished them off with a clever strike under the goalkeeper who was diving full stretch in anticipation of a shot into the corner.
